The Friends of Camden Music Service was conceived in 2001 and registered as a charity, Camden Music Trust (CMT), in 2008. It exists to ensure that musical opportunities at every level are available to all children and young people in Camden, regardless of their ability to pay. With 15,000 children in Camden living below the poverty line (40% of children living in the borough), this is a real problem which Camden Music Trust is committed to addressing.
With the creation of a national network of music hubs which will deliver the key elements of the Department for Education (DfE) and the Department of Culture, Media and Sport’s (DCMS) National plan for Music Education (published November 2011), CMT and Camden Music Service have taken on new responsibilities in coordinating the local music framework and bringing together schools and professional music organisations.

Supported by its 9 Trustees who have a wide range of professional expertise, the Trust has begun a new phase of its existence.  We will raise funds for activities to provide high quality music making opportunities for 5000 children and young people each year.

The local authority has always generously supported our excellent Camden Music Service. But recent cuts to central government grants mean that we urgently need the help of parents, trusts, foundations and businesses and individual donors, to sustain the hugely valued work which has been pioneered in Camden in offering opportunities to disadvantaged young people.

We are raising funds for:

•    Bursaries to cover the costs of music lessons for highly talented children living below the poverty line.

•    Events that inspire children and encourage them to aim really high such as the Camden Music Festival at the Royal Albert Hall.

•    Running costs of 2 Saturday music centres, 35 youth ensembles (orchestras, choirs and jazz group) and holiday courses.

•    Salaries of specialist music staff who work with disadvantaged children.

We need to raise £250,000 a year to ensure the Music Service continues to offer high-quality music activities to all young people in the borough. You can help by making a donation of any size.
