The Winner of the Tower Hamlets Book Award 2011 is...

...Joe Layburn, for Street Heroes, who narrowly beat Ros Asquith (Letters from an Alien Schoolboy) and Pete Johnson (Vampire Blog) to claim the prize. Joe, present at the finale held at the Whitechapel Idea Store, told pupils present how delighted he was to have won the award in the borough that his book, dealing with the battle of Cable Street, is set.

Over 150 pupils and staff from 14 schools attended the event on 25th November. 9 Schools took part in the annual presentation competition in which groups of pupils champion one of the shortlisted books. This year the presentations were the best yet with live acting and video.

Guest Judges this year were Joe Layburn and Ros Asquith (who were also kept bust signing books and talking to the children), Anne Canning - Head of Learning and Achievement at Tower Hamlets, Jo Humphreys-Davis from Walker Books, and Andrea Reece from Picadilly Press who very kindly gave their time (and had great fun in the process).

The winning presentation (after much deliberation) was Globe School's performance of Letters from an Alien Schoolboy.
